Some families are built through bloodlines, others through the happy accidents of life. For Olivea, her three pups came into her world in three very different ways: a sweet girl who chose her by simply sitting on her feet, a shy “rejected” show dog with champion blood, and a fluffy little surprise found in a Las Vegas parking lot. From the beaches of California to the chaos of walking three very different personalities at once, their story is full of laughter, quirks, and the kind of companionship only dogs can bring.
When and how did your first dog come into your life?
I got all 3 when they were puppies.
Eva was my first sweet little girl. I was holding another puppy when she walked over and sat on my feet to look up at me, from that I knew she chose me, so I put down the one I was holding and adopted Eva. She has joined me moving from Arizona to California where she's become a spoiled beach girl!
Ranger was a rejected show dog from his litter. He came from a grand champion winning show dog family, but because he was born an Agouti they wouldn't use him as a show dog so I purchased him from their family when he was around 4 months old.
Ghost came from a parking lot in Las Vegas on the way to see Comic Con!
So I have 1 rescue, one from a breeder and one from a parking lot.
How did you come up with your huskies' names? Any story you want to share?
Eva was originally named "Eve" because I was obsessed with the movie Wall-E. She wouldn't respond to Eve, and one afternoon, someone said Eva on TV, and she perked right up! After that, her name was changed to Eva.
Rangers name was chosen by my husband, who was a member of the military.
Ghost I originally wanted to name bear, but that seemed very cliche in the doggo world with there being so many other Bears. Being a little black soot ball that would disappear into the fluffy black rugs and dog beds, Ghost seemed very fitting!
What made you want to have three Huskies?
Eva seemed lonely as she was getting older, so I got her Ranger to keep her company. As much as she acts like he bothers her, she really loves him, just quietly! Then, when Eva started getting older and playing less, poor Ranger seemed sad and lonely, so I wanted to get him a brother. Funnily enough, Eva started perking up when we got Ghost as a puppy, and she suddenly had a ton of energy to play again! Ranger was jealous because he wanted to be in the middle and had always had a shy personality; he couldn't quite figure out how to jump in. Nowadays, Eva is slowing down due to hip dysplasia, and Ranger is more comfortable playing with them all, on his terms. He loves to chase Ghost up and down the stairs while Eva referees from the side.
Having 3 huskies must give you plenty of moments that are both frustrating and hilarious. Could you share one of those stories?
Yes! They all have completely different personalities and want different things.
Ghost loves to play nonstop.
Eva likes to play but also to referee the others.
Ranger is my sweet/shy boy who likes his quiet and little play times here and there, but mostly snack time.
I tried taking all 3 to the snow, because they're 'Snow Dogs'. They hated it and all wanted to go home right away. They're so used to the beach and running free in the sand and water, they were not impressed with the cold, mushy snow!
When I take all 3 out on walks, they like to try and go different directions, and if we don't go Eva's direction, she will lie down right where we are. Her brothers will look at her and huff around or cry because she won't move. While it's funny, because she's old and sassy, I still want to make sure the boys enjoy their walk, so now I walk the boys first and Eva separately. Sometimes I walk them all together, but only when I know we have a lot of time to wander where she wants to go and I'm not in a rush to get somewhere.
Any tips you want to share with the dog parents who are planning to have their second dog?
Make sure you're mentally prepared!! While your first dog will help with training the second, with good habits and tricks, they also teach them any bad habits they may have.
If you already have a high-energy dog who is a little older, and you're adopting another, make sure you have the time and energy. While the dogs entertain each other, they still need a lot of human interaction and attention.
